Centres of expertise and European Reference Networks
- Health services throughout the European Union (EU) have to guarantee quality, security and equality for every EU citizen. Directive 2011/24/EU on patients’ rights in cross-border
healthcare is an important achievement of the ‘patient empowerment’ policy of the European Commission (EC).Through this Directive, the EU requires EC and Member states to support the continued development of European reference networks (ERNs) between healthcare providers and the recognition
of centres of expertise (CEs) at national level.
- First call for interest to establish a European Reference Network (ERN) has been launched by the European Commission last 16th March and will be opened until 21st June 2016.
- Based on more than 10 years of experience in networking trhough ENERCA, an application for the upcoming ERN in Rare Hematological diseases (ERN-RHD) is being developed led by its coordinator, Prof Joan Lluis Vives Corrons. Network disease coverage will be expanded by including Rare Hematological diseases classified in 6-8 disease thematic sub-nets coordinated under the umbrella of the ERN-RHD.
